Ah Record Store Day! My favorite commercial holiday of the year is coming this Saturday, Apr 21! In case you weren’t aware, Record Store Day (or RSD for short) is when bands and music lovers around the world celebrate those shiny waxy physical media storage of music (I think they’re called vinyl records) and the venerable shops that carry them – your local independent record store!
Now in its fifth year, there are tons of cool, exclusive vinyl (and some CDs) being released on RSD this year. Most of these records are limited and numbered, with some very rare collections included. Remember, these are only available at your local independent record shoppe. You can find the full list of releases here.
Today, I’m going to list out the six records that I’m excited about getting for this Saturday. Tomorrow, I’m going to list out some of the cool RSD events happening around the St Louis area. On Monday, hopefully, I will have some pictures up from my adventures on Record Store Day!
Here are the records I’m most excited about, listed alphabetically:
1. Arcade Fire – Sprawl II 12″
2. Beach House – Lazuli 7″
3. Sigur Ros – Hvarf/Heim LP
This double LP is a collection of some of Sigur Ros‘s rarer materials, available for the first time on vinyl. The first side (Hvarf) is composed of b-sides, unreleased songs, and reworked materials, while the other (Heim) is an acoustic take on some of the band’s more famous songs.
4. St Vincent – KROKODIL 7″
This is also the same song that she sang while crowd-surfing at Coachella!!
5. The Tallest Man on Earth – King of Spain 12″
6. Smuggler’s Way Collection
This is probably the coolest item from the RSD releases. This is a combination Flexi Disc – Zine that showcases the artists from the Ribbon imprint of Domino Records. It includes singles from Real Estate, Dirty Projectors, Cass McCombs, John Maus, and Villagers. Contributing to the zine are articles written and drawn by Laura Marling, The Kills, and Lower Dens. Super cool!
