Album To Check Out: Shearwater – Animal Joy

Originally co-founded with Will Sheff, Shearwater has been steadily captained by Jonathan Meiburg ever since Sheff left to concentrate on Okkervil River. Teaming up with ex-wife Kimberly Burke and drummer Thor Harris, the band has quietly produced a stream of critically-acclaimed cerebral folk albums, highlighted by 2008’s beautiful Rook.

Animal Joy is Shearwater’s sixth record and signifies a slight change in their musical direction. It is a move away from the more airy and epic feel of the their earlier works and is more of a “rock” album. Check out lead single Breaking the Yearlings and standout You as You Were below.

Shearwater are coming to St Louis on 2/7 at Off Broadway. Check them out for some excellent pastoral music, Meiburg’s operatic voice, and Thor’s dynamic live drumming. (tickets here)

Shearwater – Animal Joy comes out 2/14 via Sub Pop (order here)
