Album To Check Out: Soko – I Thought I Was An Alien

Soko is French actress and musician Stephanie Sokolinski. Back in 2007, she released an EP, Not Sokute, that contained a song that became a massive hit in Europe.

It’s easy to see why the song I’ll Kill Her became a hit. It contrasts harsh imageries and violent lyrics with Soko‘s playful accent and twee tunes that intrigues the listener’s ears. It recalls an angrier Kate Nash or a more psychotic Lily Allen.

Instead of releasing a full length to capitalize on this hit however, Soko inexplicably pulled away from music, citing that she was scared of the industry and that she wanted to concentrate on acting instead.

Five long years later, Soko is finally back and is ready to debut her full length. Abandoning the twee nature of her EP, I Thought I Was An Alien is a darker and more forlorn album. Instead of singing songs about playful revenge and horrible days, Soko now yearns for lost innocence and past loves. It shows a singer, while still not quite ready to give up the past, is at least hoping to grow up and out of her shell.
