So, a couple of days ago I stumbled upon an interview of Grimes at the SXSW Festival. Grimes‘ newest album Visions is currently one of my favorite records of 2012, but listening to her brand of futuristic electro-pop, it is easy to think of Grimes as this technological singing machine. The interview changed all that.
The interviewer was a guy named Nardwuar the Human Serviette, who as his name implies, is dressed like a human tablecloth, with his plaid golfer Gatby’s hat and pants. Using a combination of extensive background research and the giving out of presents based on the said research, the interview flustered Grimes, reducing her to awkward silences and fits of giggling. It was a very insightful interview that humanizes Grimes. Most of all, it was extremely entertaining.
Intrigued, I did more research on Nardwuar. Apparently he is a celebrity interviewer from Vancouver (and member of the band The Evaporators) who has been doing these sorts of interview tactics with musicians (and sometimes political leaders as well) for a while now. I checked out his extensive archived list of videos in his YouTube channel. The results of these interviews are sometimes awkward, sometimes hilarious, and always entertaining. Most of time, the people interviewed expresses extreme disbelief at the sort of intimate background information that Nardwuar digs up on them.
Here’s one with Drake:

His most impressive interview to date though was with Pharrell, who said, “This is one of the most impressive interviews I’ve ever experienced in my life. Seriously.”
I’m going to spend a couple more hours watching these interviews.
