The titular character of garage-punk New Jersey band Screaming Females refers to one person – lead singer/ guitarist Marissa Paternoster, she of the guitar-shredding, mic-swallowing, foot-stomping, voice-howling origin.
Ugly, their newest effort, is produced by the legendary Steve Albini. As with all Albini-helmed productions, the resulting sound is cleaner and the vocals more bare-bones. This contrasts with the band’s earlier efforts where the music is more muddled.
The clarity of the production turns out to be an advantage as it only serves to highlight the talents of Paternoster. You can hear each frantic yelp and impassioned scream in the record. This is a very good thing.
