I first came across the music of Denton, Texas singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe after she performed an intimate show at the sadly-departed Billiken Club at SLU around 2 years ago. The performance was raw and intimate – a stripped-down acoustic that bares the soul of Jaffe’s scraggly vocals pared with her folk melodies.
Back then, she only had a single full length and a couple of EPs to her name – the content of which reflect the quiet intimacies of her performance. Jaffe’s forthcoming sophomore LP, The Body Wins reflects a huge musical growth. While there is still a folk tendency to a couple of her songs, the production is now bigger and more outwardly sonic. You can see the shift towards a pop-orientation. The amount of instrumentation has increased and electronic accompaniments can be heard. In some ways, this growth is appropriate given the hugeness of Jaffe’s vocals.
