DIIV, formerly known as Dive, started as the bedroom solo project of Zachary Cole Smith, guitarist of Brooklyn rock band Beach Fossils. He has since recruited three additional members including the former drummer of the Smith Westerns to form a four-piece. Their sound is one that is rooted in murky guitar-driven shoegaze pop.
After releasing a trio of buzz-worthy 7″ singles, the band is now ready to debut their highly anticipated first record Oshin. Like its parent-band, DIIV have filled their album with songs that have a huge washed-out wall of guitar-driven sounds. Largely lyric-less (or more accurately, filled with lyrics that are more or less mumbled,) Oshin offers the kind of chilly, relaxed atmosphere that befits the band’s wet seashore originating name.
