Album To Check Out: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Mature Themes

Before he formed the Haunted Graffiti, Ariel Pink is one misunderstood musical genius. The songs he creates are experimental, obtuse, and highly inaccessible. There was no denying that there is something great hidden behind the songs, but if only there was an easier way to understand them!

While performing as a solo act live, more than once, Ariel Pink has been booed off the stage. Mainly because his songs were not really meant to be performed live, but also because Ariel Pink is a moody fellow who doesn’t care about what his audience thinks or cater to their whims.

Forming Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti sort of changed all of that. Now backed by a full band, Ariel’s more out-there tendencies have been toned down. While the music is still brilliant, it is also far more accessible. Their first record Before Today was hailed as one of the year’s best when it came out two years ago. Their sophomore record is a continuance of this trend. Mature Themes maintains the experimental nature of Ariel Pink‘s songwriting but filters them for a wider range of audience (or at least less narrow). Take a listen and judge for yourself.

Only heard a few tracks, so I’m interested to hear the whole thing. I feel like Ariel can be wildly inconsistent.

  2. I actually liked it more than Before Today, but then I wasn’t really too high on Before Today!
