How To Dress Well, the bedroom project of Berlin-via-Brooklyn producer Tom Krell, revels in the minute details of the romantic. His breakthrough debut record Love Remains, released back in 2010 was one of the forebearers of indie music’s foray into R&B synths and love-lorn jams.
Total Loss, How To Dress Well‘s sophomore record, as the album title implies, deals more with love loss than found. It’s a darker record than its predecessor. As Krell explains, he wrote the album during a period of devastating loss and he was all messed up. The devastation shines through in the record, and while the romantic aspects still appear (highlighted as usual by Krell’s beautiful falsetto), overall this is great downer record. I meant that in a good way. Sometimes, there is nothing more glorious than sadness.
