Album To Check Out: Foxygen – We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic

foxygenEver since CMJ a couple months back, I have started paying serious attention to California-based duo, Foxygen. Composed of singer Sam France and guitarist/keyboardist Jonathan Rado, Foxygen self-released an EP last year that was brilliant in its unorthodoxy. Playing without regard to structure or melody and sometimes both, the music that the duo creates builds a hallucinatory trip into their mind.

The EP quickly captured the attention of indie label Jagjaguwar, and now Foxygen is ready for their debut record. Engineered by famed producer Richard Swift, We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic, is my first favorite album of 2013. Building on the psychedelia of their early EP, Foxygen have streamlined their sound, making it eminently more re-playable. With France’s penchant for mimicking the vocal accents of Mick Jagger and the ticks of Bob Dylan, 21st Century Ambassadors will take you into a trippy ride back to the 70s. Great debut record, I loved this one.

Check out the star-making video for San Francisco, the (very) early front-runner for my favorite video of 2013 embedded below.

Foxygen are coming to play in St Louis at the Firebird on 3/9, opening for Unknown Mortal Orchestra. I predict a future headlining date soon! (tickets here)

Foxygen – We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic comes out 1/22 via Jagjaguwar (order here)
