Ducktails is the one-man side project of Matthew Mondanile. You might know him as being the guitarist of New Jersey chill rock band, Real Estate. When Mondanile first started out Ducktails, it was an entirely solo project – more of an outlet for Mondanile’s love for the vintage bloops and bleeps of old television and video game soundtracks.
This has been slowly changing with each subsequent Ducktails release and has now come under a complete change with his fourth and newest record (and first under indie bigwig Domino), The Flower Lane. For one, The Flower Lane is now a completely collaborative affair. With the help of a backing band, guest vocals from Cults‘ Madeline Follin and Future Shuttle‘s Jessa Farkas and production assistance from Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) among others, Ducktails no longer feels or sounds like a one-man bedroom project. In a lot ways, the newest record sounds more like an extension of a Real Estate record – clean, polished, breezy sunny music. Of course there are still strong hints of the old Ducktails style here with synths and piano lines that differentiates it from Mondanile’s main band.
If you are a fan of Real Estate, you will love this. Very chill and relaxing music.
