Autre Ne Veut, despite what the name may imply is not some avant-garde French artist. Rather, he is Arthur Ashin, an electronic R&B singer by way of Brooklyn. Similar to contemporaries such as How To Dress Well, Ashin’s brand of indie R&B is more nuanced and arty. His self-titled debut dives into the lo-fi end of electronica and adjusts it by way of heartfelt singing – each whisper and murmur in each verse feels deliberate and real.
Autre Ne Veut‘s sophomore record, the tension-filled Anxiety, ups the ante of what he has done before. Ashin may have shed the lo-fi skin of his debut record, but the songs in Anxiety are just as immediate as before. The songs don’t just get by the mood of the music. Rather, you can feel the power and climax as Ashin punctuates each word.
