Album To Check Out: Chvrches – Recover EP

chvrches-churches-laurenIf you have followed any of the buzz surrounding the madness that is SXSW last week, then you would know that one of the biggest winners from that week of overwhelming music craziness is the Scottish band Chvrches. As one of the awardees of the Inaugural Grulke prize (for Developing non-US Act), it’s safe to say a lot of music lovers know more about synth-pop trio now than the week before.

I have written about Chvrches before as part of my Band Discovery series when their single The Mother We Share dropped last year and rightfully caused a stir among music bloggers. The Mother We Share was what pure pop perfection would sound like distilled into a single song. It combines the electro shimminess of The Knife with the pop catchiness of Robyn. It is with these large expectations before them that Chvrches are readying their follow-up EP, Recover, where they must prove that they are more than a one-song wonder. And I am happy to report that the band has succeeded.

The highlight of the EP is the title track itself, which is just as shiny and pop-catchy as The Mother We Share. ZVVL is dubstep banger, while Now Is The Time is a more chill track with Iain Cook and Martin Doherty mixing their vocals in to nicely contrast the sweetness of Lauren Mayberry’s coos. If the Recover EP is a sign of things to come, then I can’t wait to hear more from Chvrches. I’m excited about the future of pop!
