Album To Check Out: !!! – THR!!!ER

ChkChkChkBack in 2011, I attended Loufest – St Louis’ own annual two day music festival in Forest Park. The headliners that year were TV On The Radio and The Hold Steady (originally The Roots, but they canceled). It was a fun but not particularly memorable festival. I remember being excited at seeing Cat Power returning to stage for the first time in a long while and having a blissed out moment watching a spectacular (and wholly underrated) set by Deerhunter.  But the band I remember the most from the festival was dance rockers !!! (pronounced Chk Chk Chk). And the reason why their set was so memorable was because it looks everyone was having so much FUN during their set!

Led by ultra-charismatic frontman Nic Offer, !!! create tunes that are plain-out hooky and danceable with an itchy, scratchy, grove attached to them. During that Loufest set, Offer and his band readily jumped out among other bands with their boundless enthusiasm and cheekily groovy hits. The fun was so contagious that Offer got the whole crowd, half of which probably don’t have any idea who the band are, dancing on their feet.

And while !!!‘s live sets are definitely something to experience, their albums hope to replicate the same experience. !!!‘s awesomely titled fifth album, THR!!LER is actually the most polished and cleanest album the band has ever been and one that boasts the highest work of production. It also crams a bigger amount of hooks and funk than their earlier efforts and as a result, THR!!!ER feels like their best album to date. It looks like !!! are definitely trying to go bigger and better. Either way, you’ll be there to dance along.
