Album To Check Out: Jenny Hval – Innocence Is Kinky

jennyhvalExperimental avant-garde singer Jenny Hval is an active player in the arts community of her native country of Norway. A published novelist and a frequent media commentator, it is Jenny’s work as a musician though that she is most known for, where she works using either the guises of solo project Rockettothesky, as part of the duo Nude on Sand, or under her own Jenny Hval moniker.  Her songs are known for being sexually explicit and uncomfortably intimate while covered under a wave hauntingly gorgeous drone.

Innocence Is Kinky is Jenny’s second full-length record under the Jenny Hval name. Produced by PJ Harvey frequent collaborator, John Parish, Innocence finds a bigger, bolder, more experimental Jenny, especially compared to her relatively quiet debut record Viscera. Working with Parrish has allowed Jenny to bring out the epic scale of her songs while maintaining the intimacy of her earlier works.

Innocence Is Kinky is a record that you must immerse yourself into to be truly appreciated.  It is a powerful record that both frightens and exposes the listeners with both its melodies and its lyrics. More than once, I felt the hair in my arms stand-up listening to the album. There is a creeping beauty in the songs that digs deep into your soul. A wonderfully challenging record.
