After writing about the great new Vampire Weekend record yesterday, I thought it was kinda funny that I’ll be writing about another vampire-related band today. Wampire are the two piece Portland duo of Eric Phipps and Rocky Tinder (the band are a five piece live). The goofy name came during Phipps’s time in Germany, a playful misspelling of his vampire nickname.
Musically, Wampire create songs that are baroque yet catchy. The melodies are built rhythmically on electronic synth organs and throbbing bass slaps. There’s an old-timey sinisterness beguiling the melodies that seems oddly appropriate for the band. Their debut record Curiosity combines these creepily weird qualities to form out foot-tapping retro pop music. I highly enjoyed their set when I had the chance to see them a few weeks back when they opened for Foxygen and fellow Oregon natives Unknown Mortal Orchestra. An auspicious beginning for a promising band.
