Speedy Ortiz is the name of a tragic tertiary character from the Hernandez Brothers’ cult comic Love and Rockets. It is also the name of a four-piece rock band from Northampton, Massachusetts. Led by guitarist and singer Sadie Dupuis, Speedy Ortiz started out as a lo-fi solo project for Dupuis out in Brooklyn before she decided to go to UMass-Amherst to pursue her MFA. It was there where the seeds of the band began to take root as Dupuis met future band members bassist Darl Ferm, guitarist Matt Robidoux, and drummer Mike Falcone.
Major Aracana is Speedy Ortiz’s very, very good – and dare I say it, great – debut record. The lyrics are raw, vulnerable, and unnerving (Dupuis has her Masters in poetry after all). And the guitars are big and zippy and recall your 90s indie heroes like Pavement. Major Arcana is wild and unpredictable and slightly a little off-kilter – just like how you would want an indie band to introduce themselves.
Speedy Ortiz is coming to St Louis on July 15! They will be playing at Melt (tickets here)
