King Krule is 19-year-old Archy Matrshall, a young teen music wunderkind from East London. Three years ago, while working under the name Zoo Kid, Marshall released the devastatingly great single, Out Getting Ribs. Out Getting Ribs is sparse and raw. But within its four minute structure, you can feel the personal pain and anguish of Marshall. That song announced to me that young Archy Marshall is an artist to watch.
Now three years later and having changed his name to King Krule (as homage to the Donkey Kong villain), Marshall is finally ready to release his debut record. Marshall sure gave us quite a wait, but the resulting album, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, is one that is worth it. Comprising a full 14 tracks, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon showcases the depth and soul of Marshall. The songs are eclectic and bold. They are nontraditional and don’t have any easy hooks. But they are brilliant. And yes, they remain ever so raw. Because of this, the deep baritone and the personal nature of Marshall becomes even more pronounced.
This is a great debut for a young artist. King Krule is someone you need to take a listen to.
