Neko Case is still fighting the good American fight. Through her solo albums as well as numerous collaborations and side projects, Neko, with her fiery red hair and big booming voice, has become one of the more prominent female artists in the indie music scene. While she has largely served as the muse to AC Newman as part of The New Pornographers and their penchant for eclectic power pop, Neko, for her own recordings, has dwelt more on the alt-country scene. It was a powerful match. Neko’s loud, clear tone compliments the twang in the music. And so while the trend among most artists these days is to go electronic and capture the bass drops, Neko is sticking with good ole Americana.
Neko Case‘s newest record, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, may be her most mouthful, but it is also her most aurally pleasing . Stark and vulnerable, The Worse Things Get… strips away any excess in production and focuses on what is most important – Neko’s voice. This creates a beautiful connection with the listener. You can almost picture Neko herself, telling the stories and being witty or confessional, as you listen the songs. Keep fighting the good fight, Neko Case. I salute you.
Neko Case is coming to St Louis! She’ll be playing at The Pageant on Oct 20 (tickets here)
