Just think, Sky Ferreira could have been your typical teen pop star. Signed to the major record label Capitol at the young age of 15, Sky was molded and herded through different directions, from bubblegum to electro-euro, in an effort to fit her as a teenage pop star. None of these fared well and through her teen years, Sky have been told that she was a failure. It wasn’t until Sky decided to find her own voice and not let other people dictate her image and sound that she started achieving success.
This success she found through her EP Ghost and through the Dev Hynes collaborated song, Everything Is Embarrassing. Listening to Ghost though, you can tell Sky is still a little unsure of what she wants to be. Ghost was a weird little collection of songs that scratches various genres from the opening acoustic strums of Sad Dream to the funky synths of Everything Is Embarassing. So when Sky announced that she was releasing her debut record, Night Time, My Time, listeners don’t really know what type of music she was prepared to release.
It turns out that Sky’s got a whole new direction for herself. Forgoing any musical relations with Ghost, even with the successful Everything Is Embarassing, Night Time, My Time is a powerful, confessional, almost angry pop record. And it feels fully Sky. This album is an immensely pleasurable listen, full of catchy hooks and lyrics that reflect the trying times that Sky has gone through. Songs like 24 Hours and I Blame Myself are straight-up almost perfect pop songs. Heavy Metal Heart showcases Sky’s powerful voice and how strong a singer she really is. And You’re Not The One is a clubby hit perfect for dancing. The whole record, from the top-down is just great pop. And the best part is that we feel Sky’s presence in these songs, like this is who she really is, potential fully exposed.
The fact that Night Time, My Time is so good then is why I am frustrated that recent media stories on Sky have been more about her troubles with the law and her controversial actions of late. We should be hearing more of why Night Time, My Time is really one of the better records this year. Instead, we get stories of Sky getting busted for drug possession, cancelling shows, and a lapse of judgement in choosing a NSFW album cover art. It’s almost easy to want to pinpoint Sky’s failures like that’s all she did since her teen years. But at 21 years of age, Sky is really only living her life, finally choosing the kind of artist she wants to be instead of what people tell her to be. And for that I applaud her and support her. Night Time, My Time is one of the ten best records this year. That’s the truth.
