Boston-based trio Gem Club makes the saddest music. Led by Christopher Barnes on vocals and piano and Kristen Drymala on cello and Ieva Berberian on back-up vocals, the compositions that Gem Club makes are melancholy and tragic. Barnes has that empathic voice that gives solace and stirs strong emotions within you.
In Roses, Gem Club‘s sophomore full length, is a sweeping, more fully realized version of the band’s 2011 debut Breakers. It’s constructed that way too. Barnes worked closely with music director and string arranger Minna Choi to make In Roses more of a full length suite rather than a series of songs. The resulting compositions feel more like a soundtrack, a late night companion piece to all those lonely nights of sadness.
