Monday evening brought the talented Alynda Lee Sagarra and the rest of her New Orleans band, Hurray For The Riff Raff for a free acoustic in-store show at St Louis’s local record store, Vintage Vinyl. Hurray For The Riff Raff are opening for Shovels and Rope the following night for a much-anticipated show at Off Broadway. Because that show has been sold-out for weeks now and I wasn’t able to get my tickets, I was really glad that Hurray For The Riff Raff are doing this free show beforehand instead so that I could have the chance to see them live.
And it was a treat to see them. Sagarra has a deep and pure alto to her voice that makes every song she sings all the much more heart-breaking. Backed by a fiddle and upright bass, Hurray For The Riff Raff sings old-timey Appalachian folk songs that feels like a warm blanket of comfort on that brisk cool St Louis evening, much to the appreciation of the growing and adoring crowd.
Watch photos from the show below as well as a recording of the band singing I Know It’s Wrong (But It’s Alright) from their newest record Small Town Heroes.
