Trust is the musical project of the Toronto-based Robert Alfons . It actually started out as a collaboration between Alfons and Austra drummer Maya Postepski, as they were during Trust‘s self-titled debut record TRST. But the band has since condensed down to just Alfons doing solo work. As Trust, Alfons’ specialty is to create dark, witchy music that somehow dances and pulsates over a a sludge of mud and murk.
With Trust‘s sophomore record Joyland, there seems to be a slight sea of change with Alfons’ music. Yes, it still is sludgy and murky and yes it still is dark dancey music. But as the name of the album implies, there is a sense of joy shining within all this dark music. While its predecessor TRST feels sinisterly creepy and uncomfortable, Joyland feels more alive and light, or at least as alive and light as witchy music can be. I actually quite like the joy in all this darkness.
