Last Saturday night brought London band Fanfarlo to town for an intimate night of concert at the historical Duck Room at Blueberry Hill here in St Louis. The band came over two years ago but I had to miss them because I was out of town, but I was determined not to miss them this year.
Touring in support of their newest record, Let’s Go Extinct, the band balanced the icy beauty of the new record with the folky anthems of their older songs. What I loved the best about the band was their incorporation of nontraditional rock instruments such as trumpets, sax, the electric violin, and even a singing saw. Though I was disappointed in my hometown for such a sparse attendance, the smaller crowd did add a level of intimacy to the songs that made them feel personal, which adds to the wonderfulness of the performance.
