Last night brought the New York duo of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter of Phantogram for a show here in St Louis. Touring behind their propulsive, louder, second record Voices, Phantogram brought with them a big set of tunes and an even bigger set of showmanship. With the deafening bass surrounding me and a killer light show ahead of me, it became clear to me that seeing Phantogram live is the real correct way to listen to the band’s songs. Everything about the show setup from the sounds to the visuals was a sensory overload, enhancing the already strong set of tunes that Berthel and Carter created. Channeling a younger Karen O, Berthel owned the stage as she sang, danced, head-banged, and soaked in the adulation of the rowdy, delirious crowd. Phantogram brought it and owned it last night.
Brooklyn all-girl quartet TEEN opened the show with their psych-tinged pop, setting up the crowd for the mind-melting headliner ahead.
Photos from the show are below as well as a video recording of Phantogram‘s latest single Nothing But Trouble.
