Album To Check Out: Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks – Enter the Slasher House

img-avey-tare_160825391806If you are fan of indie superstars Animal Collective, then you would know that its members have always been known for their eclectic outputs, whether it be together as a group or individually through their own projects. So it did not surprise me, not even a little bit, when I heard that the newest side project of Collective member Avey Tare is called Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks. But of course!

Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks is composed of Avey Tare himself (aka Dave Portner), Dirty Projector‘s ex-member Angel Deradoorian and Ponytail drummer Jeremy Hyman. As their band name and their debut record name Enter the Slasher House implies, the group has described themselves as a “group of three hippies on a road trip through the backwaters of 2013s rural music scene fall prey to a murderous cannibalistic band making…”

Though Animal Collective has always thought of themselves as being a collaboration with no true leader, it was generally understood that Avey Tare is their main songwriter. Because of this, it is easy to trace the lineage of Enter the Slasher House. Sharing the same roots as Animal Collective‘s last record Centipede Hz (which was mostly written by Portner), Slasher House resembles the psychedelic power guitar plays of the former, only with a more stripped-down nature. Adding elements of frights, plus some eery melodies laid down by Deradoorian, the album will give Animal Collective fans plenty to love.
