I have talked before about TEEN, the Brooklyn via Nova Scotia all-girl quarter led by Kristina “Teeny” Lieberson, formerly keyboardist of Here We Go Magic, and her two sisters, Lizzie and Katherine plus friend Bosha AlSaadi. I first heard about the band back in mid 2012, when they released the summery, extremely-catchy single Better. I loved that single and have remotely followed the band offhandedly since.
I had the chance to catch TEEN last week here in St Louis when they opened for Phantogram, and it was only then that I realized how much the band has grown and matured. They no longer carry that lo-fi poppy sound from Better and from their first record In Limbo. Instead, they have refined their music to one that is more experimental and more baroque. It signifies that the band is willing to challenge themselves and in a lot of ways, it fits them better. That is the exact sound they are presenting in their sophomore record The Way and Color. TEEN have grown up and they are more interesting for it.
