Last night brought Scottish synth-pop act Chrvches here to St Louis to unofficially mark the start of summer. I’ve adored Chrvches‘ music since I first heard of them two years ago and their debut record The Bones of What You Believe was one of last year’s best freshman records so I was pretty excited to be seeing the band live for the first time last night.
Chrvches definitely brought the sights and sounds to their show for sure. The intricately set-up light show the band brought with them perfectly complimented and matched up with the comforting synths that they played. And while lead singer Lauren Mayberry is the undeniable headliner and draw for most fans of the band, I gotta admit that I quite enjoyed sideman Martin Doherty’s singular turn at the spotlight when he sang the band’s penultimate song, Under The Tide.
Portland Oregon band Summer Cannibals opened the show with their full blown Pacific Northwest Riot Grrrl impression. Composed of three girls and a guy fully rocking out to their instruments, Summer Cannibals cranked up the amps and gave a no-nonsense head-banging performance. It made quite the first impression.
