Phox are six-piece band coming from the unassuming town of Baraboo, Wisconsin. Led by lead songwriter Zach Johnston and lead singer Monica Martin, the six friends started playing around the Madison area in 2013 and were quickly able to attract significant attention thanks to their eclectic sound mix of folk pop and soulful jazz. The undenying attraction is the charismatic presence and voice of Martin. There’s an old soul pureness to the way she sings. Mix this with the swooning melodic playings of her bandmates and you get magic.
Their self-titled debut record highlights the eccentricities of the band. Recorded in the Eau Claire home studio of fellow Wisconsin resident and rather famous musician Justin Vernon, Phox the record defies classification in how it mixes its genre. Beginning with an acapella opener to strums and woodwinds of folk to moody jazzy standards, Phox is easily able to captivate and charm its listeners. All in all, a rather pleasing record and a welcome start for a promising new band.
Phox are coming to St Louis. They will be playing at Blueberry Hill on 7/11 (tickets here)
