Album To Check Out: Merchandise – After The End

merchandisejpgMerchandise are band from Tampa , Florida who came into being from their local DIY punk scene. Except that, even though they grew up on the punk scene, Merchandise don’t really play punk music. Instead the music they create is a blend of the mopey late 80s rock from bands like The Cure and of early 90s classic rock like REM. Melancholy and spooky, the band started to gain notice starting with their sophomore record Children of Desire and broke through with follow-up Total Nite.

The success of Total Nite led the band to sign with prominent indie label 4AD and the result is After The End, Merchandise‘s newest and fourth overall record. After The End finds the band reinventing or more accurately, repositioning themselves as a more straightforward and pop-oriented rock band. Forsaking their more psychotic and weirdo tendencies from their earlier records, Merchandise still delivers moodily haunting rock tunes that could easily soundtrack your rainy afternoons.

Merchandise are coming to St Louis. They will be playing at The Luminary on 10/11 (tickets here)
