Album To Check Out: Avi Buffalo – At Best Cuckold

Avi BuffaloAvi Buffalo is the music project of one Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg from Long Beach, California, the name of his band apparently coming from Zahner-Isenberg’s love of chicken wings. Back in 2010, at the young, young age of 19, Avigdor and his bandmates came out with their self-titled debut album. The songs from Avi Buffalo the record shows a deep sense of maturity. They are often complex and intricate and are almost epic in length, all of which were qualities you don’t expect from a young band and certainly not from a songwriter as young as Zahner-Isenberg.

After the release of Avi Buffalo though, we didn’t really hear anything from Zahner-Isenberg and his band the next few years. It wouldn’t be wrong to assume that their eponymous debut would be their only musical output, that the band, because maybe of their youth and inexperience, would retreat back to obscurity. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. Four years later, Avi Buffalo are now ready for their sophomore record, At Best Cuckold. Now at the age of 23, Zahner-Isenberg returns with a group of songs that is as intricate as its predecessor. Even better, the songs feel more intimate and relatable, yet still just as grand and classy.

Avi Buffalo are coming to St Louis. They will be playing at Old Rockhouse on 10/31 (tickets here)
