The Rural Alberta Advantage have always made music that is communal. The (proudly) Canadian trio of singer/guitarist Nils Edenloff, keyboardist Amy Cole, and drummer Paul Banwatt have, since their debut record back in 2008, created songs that feel earnestly homespun and fit for sharing. During their live shows (of which I have seen twice already), the band would go down to the audience and sing their songs acoustically to accentuate the intimate feel.
With their third and newest record Mended With Gold, The RAA have continued upon this communal style. Just like before, the songs from Mended bring The RAA’s brand of ram-shackled honesty. Beyond just doing folk-rock, The RAA’s sonsg bring with it a confident anxiety, like sharing something with an old dear friend. The result is a pleasing listen as always.
The Rural Alberta Advantage are coming to St Louis. They will be playing at The Firebird on 10/12 (tickets here)
