A couple months back, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock quartet Parquet Courts released one of my favorite records of the year in Sunbathing Animal. The record – a brilliant mixture of southern blues rock and drunken stoner garage made for a chaotic yet mind-melding good time. Sunbathing Animal was the record that signifies that Parquet Courts are to be reckoned with at the top of the indie rock hierarchy.
It is with pleasant surprise then to hear that Parquet Courts are set to release another new record this year called Content Nausea. Because Content Nausea was created by only two of the band’s four main members – Andrew Savage and Austin Brown wrote and played the new songs along with help from outside friends, Parquet Courts have rebranded themselves as Parkay Quarts for Content Nausea (even more confusingly, the band is also calling itself as PCPC on their tour dates with the band PC Worship). Still, you can hear the distinctive southern blues-garage rock strain with Content Nausea. More slow-burning than the frenetic pace of Sunbathing Animal yet just as great, the two records make fantastic bookends to an amazing year for Parquet Courts.
